Description

Caramel Apple Upside Down Cake is a delightful dessert that combines the sweetness of caramel with the tartness of apples, creating a moist and flavorful cake that is visually appealing and perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 large apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (for the caramel)
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened (for the batter)
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup whole milk

Instructions

  1. Prepare the caramel topping by melting 1/2 cup of unsalted butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat, then add 1 cup of packed brown sugar and stir until smooth and bubbly.
  2. Arrange the sliced apples on top of the caramel in the cake pan.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, cream together 1/2 cup of softened unsalted butter and 3/4 cup of granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Add 2 large eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition, and stir in 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together 1 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt. Gradually add this dry mixture to the wet ingredients, alternating with 1/2 cup of whole milk, mixing until just combined.
  5. Pour the batter evenly over the arranged apples and caramel in the cake pan. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 40 to 45 minutes.
  6. Let the cake cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before inverting it onto a serving plate.

Notes

  • Overmixing the batter can lead to a dense cake; mix until just combined.
  • Always grease your cake pan well to prevent sticking.
  • Choose apples that hold their shape, like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp.
  • Allow the cake to cool in the pan for at least 10 minutes to help the caramel set.
  • Check for doneness with a toothpick; it should come out clean.
