Ingredients
Scale
- 200 g (1 1/2 cups) all-purpose flour
- 50 g (1/4 cup) unsweetened cocoa powder
- 150 g (3/4 cup, packed) brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 2 large eggs
- 115 g (1/2 cup) unsalted butter, melted
- 120 ml (1/2 cup) milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 150 g (1 cup) chopped dates
- 100 g (1 cup) chopped hazelnuts, toasted
For the toffee sauce, you will need:
- 100 g (1/2 cup) unsalted butter
- 100 g (1/2 cup) brown sugar
- 60 ml (1/4 cup) heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Prepare an 8-inch (20 cm) round cake pan or a loaf pan by greasing it and lining the bottom with parchment paper.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- In another bowl, beat the eggs, then add the melted butter, milk, and vanilla extract, mixing until smooth.
- Gently fold the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until just combined, then fold in the chopped dates and toasted hazelnuts.
- Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top. Bake for 45–50 minutes, checking for doneness with a toothpick.
- While the loaf is baking, prepare the toffee sauce by melting the butter in a saucepan, adding brown sugar, and stirring until dissolved. Then stir in the heavy cream and vanilla extract.
- Once the loaf is baked, let it cool for 10 minutes in the pan before transferring it to a wire rack. Drizzle the warm toffee sauce over the cooled loaf before serving.
Notes
- Use Medjool dates for the best flavor and texture.

- For gluten-free, substitute all-purpose flour with a gluten-free blend.
- For vegan, replace eggs with flaxseed meal or chia seeds and use plant-based butter and non-dairy milk.
